Monitor Laptop Computers • Have most of the same parts, but • smaller and arranged differently • Use a touch pad instead of a mouse Keyboard Speaker Speaker Modem Computer Touch Pad instead of mouse
How to Turn a Computer On On button • Desktop computers usually have a round “On” button near the middle of the CPU • On buttons usually have an On/Off symbol on them • To turn the computer on, simply press the On button and wait • You will see the screen light up and your desktop will appear
Turning on a Laptop Computer On button • Laptop computers also have round “On” buttons • Usually the on button is above the keyboard near the hinges; it can be on the right, in the middle or on the left • Look for the On/Off symbol • To turn a laptop on, press the On button and wait

Click here to go to the Internet. Your personal files & folders Choose from short list of frequently used programs. Click here to open a file you worked on recently. Title Bar shows Program name Working with Windows on your desktop Click & drag Title Bar to move windows around on desktop Click & drag corner to make window larger. Windows Taskbar shows both open documents.
How to Start a New File • Click the File menu • From the dropdown menu, click “New”
How to Open an Existing File • Click the File menu • From the dropdown menu, click “Open”
Opening an Existing File, Step 2 • Select a file to open from the choices that come up • Either double-click the file or click Open at the bottom
How to Save a File • Click the File menu • From the dropdown menu, click “Save”
Saving a File, Step 2 • Give the file a name you can remember • Choose the folder you want to save it in (so you can find it later) • Click Save
How to use “Save As” to save the current document with a new name • Click the File menu • From the dropdown menu, click “Save As”
How to Close a File • Click the File menu • From the dropdown menu, click “Exit” • OR • Click the X at upper right corner of the window
WordPad Exercise • Open a file: Mammogram article.rtf or Super Bowl article.rtf • Make the window full screen by clicking the box upper right • Notice the Cut/Copy/Paste icons at the top left of the screen • To move the article title from the bottom to the top of the page: • Select the article title by clicking to the left of it and dragging the cursor to the right • Click the Scissors icon or Cut command (title will disappear) soin • Move the cursor to the top of the window and click there • Click the Paste icon
