  1. Unmet need for family planning

  2. Main issue • Unmet need for family planning, although not a MDG indicator yet, has been identified as an indicator for Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women • Defined using a set of questions eliciting current preferences and behaviours (women at risk of pregnancy, their fertility preferences and current contraceptive status) • Unmet need is defined as the proportion of all married/union women who are fecund, sexually active, wish to avoid another birth or space at least two years and are not using a method of contraception

  3. Proportion of demand satisfied For monitoring purposes it is proposed that the following indicator be constructed from the response set: • Proportion of Demand Satisfied by Modern Contraception = Modern Method users/ (Modern method users + Traditional method users + Unmet need) or • Proportion of Demand Satisfied by Any Method of Contraception = (Modern Method users + Traditional method users) / (Modern method users + Traditional method users + Unmet need)

  4. Methodological issues • Data can be obtained for all women or for women currently married/union • The proportion of satisfied demand for contraception can be reported by modern methods or by all methods • It requires adaptation of the questionnaire and technical assistance for its implementation • Follow up on the inclusion of this indicator in the analysis and reporting stages
