  1. Unmet Need MICS3 Data Analysis and Report Writing Workshop

  2. Background Unmet need for family planning, although not an MDG indicator yet, has been identified as an indicator for Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women Defined using a set of questions eliciting current preferences and behaviours (women at risk of pregnancy, fertility preferences and current contraceptive status) Unmet need is defined as the proportion of all women currently married or in union who are fecund, sexually active, wish to avoid another birth or space at least two years and are not using a method of contraception

  3. Indicator Women in unmet need for spacing are those who are: Fecund (Currently pregnant, or thinks she is physically able to get pregnant) AND Currently not using contraception AND Want to space their births (Currently pregnant but did not want any more children at the time she became pregnant OR Currently not pregnant, wants to have a(nother) child, but wants to have the child at least two years later or after marriage)

  4. Indicator Women in unmet need for limiting are those who are: Fecund (Currently pregnant, thinks she is physically able to get pregnant) AND Currently not using contraception AND Want to limit their births (Currently pregnant but did not want her current pregnancy OR Currently not pregnant and does not want another child)

  5. Percentage of demand for contraception satisfied Defined as the proportion of women currently married or in union who are currently using contraception, of the total demand for contraception The total demand for contraception includes women who currently have an unmet need (for limiting or spacing), plus those who are currently using contraception Can be calculated by taking only modern contraception into account: i.e. only modern method users in the numerator Source: WHO

  6. Methodological issues Data can be obtained for all women, or only for women who are currently married/in union Proportion of demand satisfied can be obtained for all contraception or for modern contraception only The definition used in MICS3 is a somewhat modified version of the DHS definition of unmet need (includes questions on sexual activity, amenorrhea) Estimates using this modified definition will become available in MICS3 surveys for the first time
