Southeast Diesel Collaborative GOAL: Improve air quality and public health by reducing emissions from existing diesel engines.
The Numbers - cummulative • Number of Projects: 462 • Number of Engines: 53,535 • Children Impacted: ~ 14,000 buses and 3 million plus children impacted through idle reduction and bus retrofit programs in SE • Funding: $69.5 million (EPA) - $650.3 million (partner investment) • Emissions: • NOx 36,668 • VOC 3,913 • PM 2,832 • CO 12,059 • CO2 769,684
DERA Grants • 100% DERA ’08 grants closed out • 99% ARRA grants closed out • Working with States on expediting draw downs of state DERA grant program (FY’08-FY’11) and processing of FY’12 State grants
National DERA Program • National Funding Assistance Program- estimated Fiscal Year 2012 funding - $20 million • Due Monday, June 4, 2012 • Region 4 Priorities: • Promotes development of Green Corridors (I-95, I-75, I-20 or I-40) through: • Idle Reduction • Alternative fueling options • Promoting non-road retrofit and repowers for non-construction related projects • Mining • Forestry • Agriculture

Public Fleets & Rail • NC and FL –implemented successful fire/ police departments & waste refuse haulers projects. • NC and TN -Utilized CMAQ funding for many municipal fleet replacement and retrofits. • SEDC lead the country in applying CMAQ funds for clean diesel projects. • GA, KY, TN and NC applied CMAQ funding for rail projects. • SC rail efforts are impacting 750,010 engines. • NC is working with private and short haul railroads.
NonRoad • Mining and Forestry priority for FY’11-12 • 37 companies in NC, GA, AL and FL have conducted engine replacement or repowers for mining and forestry companies. • 271 equipment operators participated in idle reduction workshops • Three focus group meetings with company representatives in Alabama ( April 2012), Georgia (November 2011) and Florida (October 2011) to receive feedback on the types of air quality concerns they have and what types of technology innovations and grant opportunities could help. • SCDEHC has been actively trying to engage Vulcan Mining Company • KY DAQ’s FY’12 DERA grant will focus on mining industry.
Alternative Fuel Programs • Petite LeMans – Green Racing Challenge • Alternative Fuels webinar series (July-October 2012) • Green Acres Waste to Fuel Program @ Hartsfield International Airport in coordination with RCRA
Marine and Air Ports • Ports of Charleston, Savannah and Everglades are making efforts to either retrofit or electrify cargo handling equipment and gantry cranes. • SC launched truck replacement program for carriers servicing the Charleston port area. • Many ports are using biodiesel fuel: • Port of Memphis , Louisville, Mobile, Wilmington and Moorhead, NC • First In country Airport DERA grant Rebate program “AeroGrade” • GA and NC making huge strides working with airlines • 5 VALE projects • 18 airports in every state in SE implementing sustainability/clean air strategies
Green Corridors • Host Regional Freight Summit (August 6, 2012) • NC, FL, SC and TN are leading the SE in Alternative fuel stations. • Electric stations have doubled in past year in FL and NC • SC Trucking association has made big strides in APU installations through their “SC Gears Up for Green Growth Program” • FL Turnpike and GA have made progress with TSE stations.
Green Campus • Idle Reduction, green landscaping, clean construction, shuttle bus retrofits • Working with Minority Academic Institutions • Spelman College showcase • 1890 land grant colleges • Tennessee State biofuel program • 3rd Annual MAI sustainability conference • Georgia Southern Project Green Fuels • Alabama – Talladega, Barbour Motor Sports, Auburn University and AL Institute for Blind and Deaf Recognition Event
Community Engagement – Hi in Mississippi • Gulf Coast Children’s Environmental Fair • National Rollout of Spanish edition of “Magic School Bus Gets Cleaned Up” • 1st State to complete Clean School Bus Program- Mississippi Recognition Ceremony
Collaboration • Strategic Planning Committee Annual Meeting (August 9) to Develop FY’13-15 Strategic Plan • Annual Leadership Award Program- increased number of nominations by 50% • 2nd annual Photo Contest • Partners Conference on August 7-8
