Carbohydrates The major source of energy for the body Body breaks them down into simple sugars Two major : - simple (sugar) found in refined sugars, nutritious foods - complex (starch) include grain products. Refined grains, have been processed, which removes nutrients and fiber. Rich in fiber, which helps you feel full Source: fruits, vegetables, milk, candy, bread
Fats A component in food Certain amount of fat makes the brain and nervoussystem develop correctly Source : nuts, olive oils, salmon, butter, milk, meats, etc. 3 types: Unsaturated fats: found in plant foods and fish Saturated fats: found in meat and other animal products Trans fats: found in margarine and certain foods Fuel the body and help absorb some vitamins. The building blocks of hormones and insulate nervous system tissue
Protein builds up, maintains, and replaces the tissues Made up your muscles, organs, and immune make hemoglobin, the part of red blood cells build cardiac muscle 2 types: complete- from animal sources incomplete- lacks one or more of the essential amino acids Sources: beef, fish, eggs, dairy products, and legumes
Fibre • Tooth-breaking cereal to get it • The term refers to carbohydrates that cannot be digested • 2 types: Soluble fiber- dissolves in water shown to lower cholesterol Insoluble fiber- does not dissolve in water helps with constipation • Help lower blood cholesterol and heart disease • Slows the absorption of sugar and regulates insulin response • Move food through the digestive system • Sources: fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes
Vitamins Substances that are found in foods we eat Makes you grow and develop Vitamin D helps your bones Vitamin A helps you see at night Vitamin C helps your body heal B vitamins help you make protein and energy 2 types fat-soluble vitamins- stored in the fat tissues water-soluble vitamins- travel through your bloodstream Sources: milk, oranges, carrots, leafy green vegetables, etc.
Minerals Help your body grow, develop, and stay healthy Building strong bones Make hormones or maintain a normal heartbeat 2 types macro mineral- need large amount trace minerals- needs a tiny bit of each one Calcium- the top macro mineral helps build strong bones and teeth Sources: milk, cheese, salmon, and vegetables
Water body would stop working properly without water makes up more than half of your body weight helps you fight off illness digest your food and get rid of waste each cell depends on water to function normally needed for digestive juices, urine, and poop Sources: water, milk, fruit, vegetables
