  1. Battery with More Energy than GasolineStuart Licht, George Washington University, DMR 1006568 Outcome: Researchers at George Washington University have used nanomaterials to advance a battery with more energy than gasoline.1,2 But can it be recharged? The saga continues… Impact: Such a VB2/air battery can extend EV driving range several fold. Explanation: Vanadium diboride is an example of a multiple electron transfer material. Rather than Li’s 1 electron per atom, these molecules each release many (in this case 11!) electrons greatly increasing the storage capacity. Professor Stuart Licht (GWU) and co-PI Dr. Christopher Rhodes (Lynntech, Inc.) have teamed up on this NSF Grant Opportunities for Academic Liaisons with Industry (GOALI) award, a program which both advances cutting edge science and provides students unusual opportunities in industry R&D labs. 1Licht, Hettige, Lau, Cubeta, Wu, Stuart, Wang "Nano-VB2 synthesis from elemental vanadium and boron: nano- VB2 anode/air batteries," Electrochem. &Solid State Letters, 15, A12 (2012). 2Licht, Ghosh, Wang, Jiang, Asercion, Bergmann "Nanoparticle facilitated charge transfer and voltage of a high capacity VB2 anode," Electrochem. &Solid State Letters, 14, A83 (2011).
