Diploma Requirements O.S.S.D. 18Compulsory Credits + 12Optional Credits + = 30Total Credits (110 hours each) + Successful Completion of the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) + 40 Hours of Volunteer Community Involvement
15 Compulsory Single Credits 4 credits in English (1 credit per grade) 1 credit in French as a second language 3 credits in Mathematics (at least 1 in grade 11 / 12) 2 credits in Science 1 credit in Canadian History 1 credit in Canadian Geography 1 credit in the Arts (Music, Art, or Drama) 1 credit in Health and Physical Education 1/2 credit in Civics & 1/2 credit in Career Studies Plus…..
3 Compulsory Group Credits G1 One additional credit in English, or French as a second language, or a Native language, or a Classical or an International language, or a Social Science, or Canadian and World Studies, or Guidance and Career Education (including Learning Strategies), or Cooperative Education G2 One additional credit in Health and Physical Education, or Business Studies, or the Arts (Music, Art, or Drama) or French as a second language, or Cooperative Education G3 One additional credit in Science (grade 11 or 12) or Computer Studies (grades 10-12) or Technological Education (grades 9-12) or French as a second language, or Cooperative Education
A Minimum of 12 Optional Credits Optional credits (a.k.a. Electives) allow you to custom build your educational program depending on your chosen destination.
The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test-OSSLT • A diploma requirement • Will be administered in the Spring of grade 10 • Retake if not successful • In-class and after school preparation sessions in grades 9 and 10 • OSSLC in grade 12 if necessary
Community Involvement • A diploma requirement • “Helping others enhances the self-image of students and fosters a greater sense of belonging. Experiences in the community may also influence career choices.” • “(Parents) …should not act as formal community activity sponsors for their own children.” • Complete a minimum of 40 hours before graduation to be completed outside normal instructional hours after June 2012. • See the Guidance link of the ECSS website for details and form to be completed.
You may choose from four types of Courses inGrades 9 & 10 • Open • Essential • Applied • Academic
Open type courses • Offered at all grade levels • Not specific to any particular post-secondary destination • Include curriculum expectations suitable to all students • Can be used to meet compulsory or optional requirements
Essential-Type Courses a.k.a.Locally Developed Courses • Intended for students entering grade 9, who have not yet completed the grade 8 expectations • Available in English, Mathematics and Science • Can be used to meet up to 6 compulsory requirements
Applied type courses • Similar learning and assessment activities as Academic type courses • Available in English, French, Geography, History, Mathematics, and Science • Intended for students who completing their grade 8 expectations with some assistance • Fewer abstract ideas than in Academic • Slower pace in some parts • Less in-depth coverage in other areas • A more practical, hands-on approach
Academic type courses • Similar learning and assessment activities as Applied type courses • Available in English, French, Geography, History, Mathematics, and Science • Intended for students who complete their grade 8 expectations quickly and with little or no difficulty • More abstract ideas than in Applied • Faster paced in some parts • More in-depth coverage in other areas • Both practical and theoretical applications

Math is Different • Crossing over from applied to academic in Math is not necessary because both pathways may lead to the most intense grade 12 university Calculus and Vectors if you wish. • The only difference is that the academic pathway is shorter by one course.

Dates to Remember: Your Student Registration form is due at Emily Carr by Friday, February 3, 2012 Follow the instructions you have been given to select your courses. Print your final selections by the date given to you by your teacher. All responses are due back to ECSS by Friday, February 17, 2012. Between February 11 and February 17, you will not be able to make any changes after you click SUBMIT. You will be given a final opportunity to verify and confirm your selections in April.
