Positive Behavior Supports Strategies for Parents
The Function of Behavior • What the child wants or what the child is getting out of the behavior? • Example: Don’t ask how do I get my child to go to bed on time? Ask why isn’t my child going to bed on time?
Function of Behavior continued • Why do you think the child is behaving that way? • 4 Functions of Behavior • Sensory (avoiding loud noises, unpleasant smells, bright lighting) • Escape (avoid something unpleasant) • Attention (whose attention) • Tangible (to get something)
PBIS Strategies • Positive Reinforcement • Catch them being good, praise for doing the right thing, teach what you expect from child, when they do it -celebrate • Highly individualized (different) for each child • Changes all the time • What does the child get motivated by? What does he/she reach for? and smiles at? Don’t assume stickers and video games work all the time. • Make sure you’re using something the child really likes
