-Tomorrow When the War Began- DEFIANCE
“The flames ran along the line of petrol in fits and starts, like a stuttering snake, but very fast…an instant later the mower became an exploding bomb” pg 90
“The first bullets hit. They rang on the steel of the truck like a giant with a sledgehammer was attacking it. Some of them hummed away again, out into the darkness, violent blind mosquitoes, ricochets.” pg 143
“I felt guilty even thinking about love while our world was in such chaos… but my heart was making its own rules and refusing to be controlled by my conscience” pg 178
“If we do this, if we succeed, I’ll be able to feel pride again.” pg 254
Picture 1 – Mouse holding up Elephant’s foot. This picture demonstrates how the mouse (teenagers) is a small force yet stands up to the elephant (the invaders) who is bigger and stronger. This picture shows the mouse’s defiance of the elephant, which represents how the teenagers defy the wants of the invaders and incapacitate them by blowing up the lawn mower, showing their defiance. By blowing up the lawn mower, the teenagers showed the invaders that they would not just let them take their freedom and their land, and in the picture, the mouse is showing that he will not just let the elephant step on him.
Picture 2 – Salmon Swimming Upstream The Salmon swimming upstream is a representation of the teenagers also going against a stronger force. By taking a bulldozer into town to collect Lee, and dodging all the bullets, it shows that they are not willing to conform or surrender, and are prepared to fight against the invaders. The salmon swimming upstream is also representative of the insubordination of the teenagers because as salmon swim upstream, they are not always sure what will be waiting for them at the end, in this salmon’s case a bear, just as the teenagers are unsure of what will be there for them when they go against the invaders.
Picture 3 – Heart and Brain Defiance is represented in a more abstract form here, showing that the brain often defies the heart, or vice versa. Ellie wrestles between her heart telling her to love, and her conscience telling her to be rational and think about the situation on hand. This picture demonstrates how the brain and heart can often have two different objectives, and in choosing one, we defy the other. The picture personifies the heart and brain by showing the hatred they have for each other, as they usually have concurring interests, which for Ellie, causes problem when Ellie has to think about either love or war. Picture 4 – Spider bites Hand and explosion The teenagers act of defiance by blowing up the Wirrawee bridge is portrayed in the photo of the spider. A spider is a small creature, yet it can cause a large impact on larger creatures such as humans. This is similar to the teenagers, who being a smaller force, make a large impact on the invaders. Also, often a spider will bite a larger creature as it is threatened, which is what the teenagers are doing with their guerrilla warfare, also in order to feel the pride they once had.
