An Overview of How the Internet Works • Protocols • Rules that govern how computer systems communicate with each other • Two basic protocols: Internet Protocol (IP) and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
Protocols • Protocols are rules that govern the exchange of information between computer networks. Two basic protocols are: • IP: Internet Protocol • TCP: Transmission Control Protocol • These two protocols are often referred as TCP/IP
IP Addresses and Domain Names • Each network on the Internet has a unique address, called an IP address. • A descriptive name, called an Internet domain name, is sometimes used. www.webliminal.com is a domain name.
Domain Types • Domain Name Ending Examples • .edu – educational (www.mwc.edu) • .gov – U.S. government agency (www.census.gov) • .com – commercial (www.microsoft.com) • .net – network (www.earthlink.net) • .org – non-profit organization or institution (www.sierraclub.org)
Packets • Packets of characters, similar to envelopes holding messages, are used to carry information on the Internet. • The Internet is a packet-switched network. • Each computer system connected to the Internet must have the proper hardware and software in order to work with packets.

Bookmarks or Favorites • The bookmark or favorites list is a collection of hyperlinks to Web pages that you want to save from session to session. • Bookmarks – Netscape • Favorites – Internet Explorer
