The Evolution of the Internet • Internet (Net) – a worldwide collection of networks that links millions of businesses, government agencies, educational institutions, and individuals • The ARPANET network was created in 1969 by the Pentagon for scientists to share information across the country, thus began the idea of the Internet
The Evolution of the Internet • Each organization on the Internet is responsible for only maintaining its own network • No single person, company, institution, or government agency controls the Internet • The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) does oversee research and set standards and guidelines for many areas of the Internet
The Evolution of the Internet • The Internet relies on an addressing system muck like the postal service to send data/info to a computer at a specific destination • IP (Internet Protocol) address – a number that uniquely identifies each computer or device connected to the Internet • Domain name – text version of an IP address

The World Wide Web • WWW – consists of a worldwide collection of electronic documents • The Web is actually a service of the Internet, they are not the same • Each electronic document on the web is called a web page • A web site is a collection of related web pages
The World Wide Web • A search engine is a program that finds web sites, web pages, images, videos, news, maps, and other information related to a specific topic • Popular search engines: • Bing • Google • Yahoo • Ask Let’s search for Walt Disney World
The World Wide Web • Types of web sites: • Portal – web site that offers a variety of services from a single, convenient location (Yahoo) • News (USA Today) • Informational (WebMD) • Business/Marketing (Geico) • Blog • Wiki • Online social network • Educational • Entertainment
The World Wide Web • Multimedia – any application that combines text with graphics, animation, audio, video, and/or virtual reality • Types of multimedia: • Graphics • Animation • Audio • Video • Virtual reality
Netiquette • Netiquette – short for Internet etiquette, the code of acceptable behaviors users should follow while on the Internet • Treat others as you would like them to treat you!
Netiquette • Examples: • Use meaningful subject lines • Be careful when using sarcasm, humor • Avoid sending spam • Do not use all caps • Never read someone’s private e-mail • Avoid sending or posting flames – abusive or insulting messages
