3. Absences • Allen ISD requires parents to send a hard copy note stating the reason for any absence so students may be excused. (no emails) • We suggest parents pick up any make up work if possible. Please contact us by email before 10 a.m. so we can gather your child’s work and send it to Mrs. Dade’s desk for you to pick up.

It will tell the student what they missed, and what they need to make-up. It will also have assignments attached.

5. Late Work Policy • Late work is any assignment that is not turned in by the due date. • Allen ISD Student Handbook states: Tenpoints will be deducted per school day for late work up to three school days.

6. Are You Connected? • Family Access Portal is the best way to keep up with how your student is doing in every class. You can see current grades, assignments that are coming up, and even get e-mail alerts concerning your child’s progress. • Please contact our SASI clerk, Mrs. Ropp, should you need a password for your account.

7. Responsibility Card • Main purpose of the cards are to make students more responsible for their actions and prepare them for middle school. • Students receive a new card each week. • Previous weeks’ card will go home in the Tuesday folder if your child received any punches for the week. • Please read the back of card, sign, and return in the Tuesday Folder by Thursday.

8. “Punches” on Card • Two different types of punches: • Behavior: Based on our 4 rules (listed on card) • 1 behavior punch is a warning. • 2 behavior punches = lunch detention • 3 behavior punches = loss of Friday Blazer Choice • 4 behavior punches = Parent phone call and loss of Friday Blazer Choice Behavior Punches are what homeroom conduct grades are based on. • Academic: For assignments not turned in. • Mandatory Study Hall

11. Blazer Time 7:50-8:50 • Enrichment and academic support • ESL, Speech, Dyslexia therapy, SSI, etc… students will be serviced during this time as well as during Blazer Time on Mondays.

12. Specials • If your student is in band or orchestra, it is very important they bring their instruments. • Band: Wednesdays & Fridays • Orchestra: Tuesdays & Thursdays • 6th Grade has Specials at the end of the day. • If there are any changes in the way your student will go home from school, it is important to let Mrs. Dade know before 1:00 p.m. as they will not return to homeroom at the end of the day.

13. Tutoring & Extra Help • HW Club: Teachers will be available on the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Tuesdays and every Thursday from 3:00-3:30pm for students who need extra help. This will start on Tuesday, August 28th. • After benchmark tests, we may invite a few students to spend additional time for some specific help with past and upcoming TEKS.

15. World Cultures with Mrs. Wilson What is it? World Cultures is the study of  groups of people, civilizations, populations, races, organizations, demographics, politics, religions, behaviors, values, beliefs, morals, laws,, social institutions, languages, governments, societies, races, and ethnicities. Classroom Connections— • Our initial Unit will be an introduction to prepare us to study the regions of our world. This will include: • Basic Geography • Basic Culture • Basic Government

World Cultures with Mrs. Wilson Classroom Connections cont.— Our study of world cultures this year will be divided into units determined by geographic regions: • Latin America • Europe • Asia • Middle East/Southwest Asia/Northern Africa • Sub-Saharan Africa • Australia/Oceania/Antarctica Home Connections— • Watch and read the news together • Discuss what’s going on in the world • Ask them their opinions on current events • Ask them about what we are learning in class

17. Mrs. Engel’s Sixth Grade Language Arts • The Language Arts Curriculum is based on the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) as required by the state of Texas.

18. Reading Focus • Main idea, details, summarization • Prefixes, suffixes, roots, base words • Fact/Non-fact/Opinion • Inference and logical conclusions • Author’s purpose • Point of View • Genre studies • Persuasive Devices

19. Written Communication Focus • The Writing Process includes the stages of prewriting, composing, evaluating, revising, editing, and publishing a final product. • Grammar includes the eight parts of speech • Capitalization and punctuation • Increasing spelling knowledge – no spelling tests in 6th Grade

20. CLASSWORK /HOMEWORK • Independent reading – Students should read at least 20 minutes a night and respond to text in their Google Classroom journal. They will read a variety of genres and have choices for responding to texts. • Spring Board assignments are primarily done in class, but students may have to complete unfinished work at home. • Word Work – Students will focus on word parts followed by a vocabulary quiz.

22. We will cover general math concepts including problem solving skills, number sense, pre-algebra, geometry and measurement. • Students will be given time to work independently at the end of class. Anything they don’t finish will be homework and due the following day. • A weekly worksheet will be given on Wednesdays and is due the following Wednesday. • View the calendar on my website to keep up to date with what is happening in class.

23. Math Continued • We will have a couple of small projects that will be completed in class. Students will work on projects at home ONLY if they run out of time in class. • Grades will be taken from daily work, the weekly worksheet, and quizzes/tests. • Online learning- visit my website for online games and videos to help with understanding of certain concepts. • Google Classroom – periodically, students will be expected to complete an assignment/question on Google Classroom.

25. HOMEWORK, QUIZZES AND TESTS FOR ALL SCIENCE STUDENTS Homework and Daily work and Project are worth 60% of your student’s grade. Students are able to redo homework or quizzes for up to a 70%. These papers will be returned in the Tuesday folder and will be expected to be corrected and returned by Thursday. I do not give homework every night. Most homework is a result of not finishing classwork or to study for tests and quizzes. Tests and Quizzes are worth 40% of students’ grades. If your child makes below a 70% on a test, they are able to correct all their mistakes for up to a 70%. These must be corrected on separate paper showing all work, with an explanation as to why their answers were wrong using scientific reasoning. Students will have 2 days to correct these tests. Students should write down quiz, test and assignment due dates in an agenda book, on their tech device, etc. It would be helpful to check with your child on a daily basis.

26. DISTRICT EXAMS • WE DO NOT TAKE STAAR SCIENCE IN 6TH GRADE • Benchmark exam is during the week of November 5th through 9th. • End of Course Exam is between May 20th and 24th. • There are no retakes or correcting for a 70% on either of these exams.

27. EXPECTATIONS FOR SCIENCE CLASS • Come in prepared to get started on the warm up questions or activity. • Keep up with assignments and turn in work on time. • Correct work if below a 70%. • Listen in class and participate. • Textbook website: On-line
