Preparation Before Our Arrival • Before we arrived all our future companions cleaned up the water trough, the ground of any rocks or anything that could be a hazard and put fresh, clean straw for bedding and some yummy, fresh Lucerne.
Mentor Visit • The Mentor Perrin Hicks also our farmer visited the students before our big work load to learn about what makes a dairy run, instruments used on a dairy, what roles are carried out and how to keep us happy and healthy. The students here lucky enough to have a nice mentor and farmer that he brought minties for answering the what is this instrument quiz!
When we Arrived • When we arrived at Murraylands Christian College we were greeted by a group of welcoming students. After we were carried off by Perrin Hicks we felt right at home and were fed some yummy milk.
The next Day • The next day we had a big sleep in and a big breakfast, we got given names today, I’m Savannah and my room mate is Norberta. We share a pen with two nice lambs, Fred and Bruce. We have new friends already and I like the students here a lot.
Savannah 2967 • Hi I’m savannah, I’m a Holstein-Friesian. I don’t like having people touch me all the time but love company. • I love feed time because I get to spend quality time with my human friends. Norberta always tries to steal my milk and she head-butts me all the time.
Norberta 2814 • Hello everyone, my name is Norberta and I’m a very outgoing calve who likes a pat and a run around my pen. I can sometimes be aggressive and a bully but that’s only because I LOVE my milk. • When I grow up I want to be on a nice farm with friendly cows and I will eat some grass with my friend Savannah.
Weight Graph As you can see above the calves gained a significant amount of weight, as they grew older their weight gain slowed down.
What Have We Learnt • We learnt how to care for calves and how to recognise if they’re sick or healthy. • Applying our skills to a future job from what we learnt • An idea of how much weight they can put, how much they can consume and what their behaviour
Thankyou’s • We would all like to say a big thank you to the farmer and mentor to make the program possible for us and letting us borrowing a calve at his expense. • Mr. Simons our teacher arranging the program • And the cows create careers program it would be impossible without the program. • And Perrin bringing in supplies
