What is the American identity? • In your table groups, discuss this question. Or and variation of it: • What is an American? What does it mean to be American? What is the American Dream? What is the American identity? What does being an American mean to you? • *Take notes. You will want the group brainstorm later.
Writing Prompt • Write a short response to our discussion today which asks, What is the American identity? • Keep in mind: this is a “first impression” writing sample for me. Show me what you know. • Guidelines: • Type it (preferred) or neatly handwrite • No more than one page • Due Friday

“Teens Believe in the American Dream” • According to a December 2004 poll of 644 teens, conducted by the Job Shadow Coalition and Harris Interactive, nearly 3 in 4 teens (71%) believe the American Dream is achievable today, with boys (75%) being slightly more optimistic than girls (68%).
