Brain Warm-Up • Write three things you remember about the distributive property • Evaluate: • 2(b + k + r) • (-3)(-8) • 8 – (-5) • -10 + 6 • -12 ÷ 3
Like Terms! January 6, 2012 Ms. Latimer
Vocabulary • Coefficient- The number in a term that is the product of a number and a variable (3n + 6, 3 is the coefficient) • Constant- A term that has a number but no variable (3n + 6, 6 is the constant)
I LIKE it, I love it • Like terms--- terms that are the same Like each other • (( )) --- they’re the same and hug because they like each other • ♠♣ --- they’re not the same and do not hug because they are not alike.
3n 8w -7 5m -9q -4k p -2t 4p -3q -8t -7n 9 2k -10w m Match the Ones Alike Find the total of the two like terms
Let’s Put It Together x + 4 – 2x – 10 x and -2x are like terms 4 and 10 are like terms 1 is the coefficient of x, -2 is the coefficient of x 4 and (-10) are constant terms
Simplify the expression5 (w – 4) + w + 8 5w – 20 + w + 8 Distributive property 5w + (-20) + w + 8 Write as a sum 5w + w + (-20) + 8 Commutative prop. 6w + (-12) Combine like terms 6w – 12 Rewrite without ( )
5w – 20 + w + 8 Distributive property 5w + (-20) + w + 8 Write as a sum 5w + w + (-20) + 8 Commutative prop. 6w + (-12) Combine like terms 6w – 12 Rewrite without ( )
Practice 4d – 6 + 5d 6 ( v + 5) - 5v + 12
On your own… 1) -13x + 9 – 5x + 21 2) 8(w + 3) - 7 + 13w
Hmmm… • Agendas: PB pg 85 #1-11 • 9 – 3n + 4(n – 6) • Underline the coefficients, circle the constants • Use the Distributive Property • Simplify
