Practice 1 • Pull out a piece of paper and assign pinyin on 26 English alphabet (A to Z)
Practice 2 • Pinyin your name and your neighbors’ names, complete with tones (as close as possible)! e.g. Daniel, Lee (dan1 niou3, li4)
Practice 3 – Tong Twisters 繞口令 1 • 非揮發性化學花卉肥料 Non-volatile chemical flower fertilizer • 化肥會揮發。 Chemical fertilizer is volatile. • 黑化肥發灰,灰化肥發黑。 Black chemical fertilizer turns grey; grey chemical fertilizer turns black. • 黑化肥發灰會揮發;灰化肥揮發會發黑。 When black chemical fertilizer turns grey, it becomes volatile. When grey chemical fertilizer becomes volatile, it turns black.
Practice 3 – Tong Twisters 繞口令2 • 媽媽騎馬,馬慢,媽媽罵馬。 • 妞妞騎牛,牛拗,妞妞擰牛。 Mother rides a horse. The horse is slow. Mother scolds the horse. A little girl rides a cow. The cow is stubborn. The little girl pinches the cow. • 吃葡萄不吐葡萄皮,不吃葡萄倒吐葡萄皮。 Eat the grape, but do not spit the grape skin. Do not eat the grape, but spit the grape skin. • 和尚端湯上塔,塔滑湯灑湯燙塔。 A monk holds the soup while climbing the tower. The tower was slippery; the soup was spilled and burned the tower.
Practice 3 – Tong Twisters 繞口令3 • 石獅寺有四十四隻石獅子, 四十四隻石獅子吃四十四只濕紫柿子。 There are 44 stone lions in the Stone Lion Temple. The 44 stone lions eat 44 wet purple persimmons. • 山前有個嚴圓眼,山後有個圓眼袁, 兩人上山來比眼,不知是嚴圓眼的眼圓? 還是圓眼袁的眼圓? In front of the mountain lives a Yan, who is round-eyed. At the back of the mountain lives a round-eyed Yuan. The two climbs the mountain to compare their eyes. We don’t know whether Yan round-eyed’s eyes are more round, or round-eyed Yuan’s eyes are more round?
Practice 4 – 施氏食獅史1/2 • 石室詩士施氏,嗜獅,誓食十獅。 In the stone chamber there is a poet surnamed SHI, who likes to eat lion and vowed to eat ten lions. • 施氏時時適市視獅。 SHI from time to time goes to the market to see lions. • 十時,適十獅適市。 At ten o’clock, it happened that there were ten lions arriving at the market. • 是時,適施氏適市。 At the time, it happened that SHI was at the market. • 氏視是十獅,恃矢勢,使是十獅逝世。 SHI, who watched these ten lions, by the power of arrows, made the ten lions passed away.
Practice 4 – 施氏食獅史2/2 • 氏拾是十獅屍,適石室。 SHI picked up these ten lions’ corpses and returned to the stone chamber. • 石室濕,氏使侍拭石室。 The stone chamber was damp; SHI made his servant to wipe the stone chamber. • 石室拭,氏始試食是十獅。 As the stone chamber was wiped, SHI started to try eating these ten lions. • 食時,始識是十獅屍,實十石獅。 At the time of eating, (SHI) started to realize that these ten lions corpses were actually ten stone lions. • 試釋是事。 Try to explain this event.
