  2. Federal Grant Awarded - 2007 A Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) Grant was awarded to the District for three years to develop a K-12 Mandarin Chinese program. The grant established partnerships with • The Stanford Research Team (SRT) from the School of Education at Stanford University • The National Center for K-16 Chinese Language Pedagogy at UC Berkeley • The California Foreign Language Project PAUSD Board Report - May 25, 2010

High School Progress • Implemented Chinese 1 Sept 2006 • Summer STARTALK program 2007 – current • Parent course in Mandarin Summer 2007 • Implemented Chinese 1, 2, 1st sem 3 2007-08 • Implemented Chinese 1, 2, 3, 4 2008-09 • Developed AP Chinese; UC approved 2009-10 • Full range of Chinese offerings 1-5 AP • 27 students took AP test PAUSD Board Report - May 25, 2010

High School Summary - 2010-11 • Will serve more than 250 students in Chinese 1 through Advanced Placement • Curriculum standards and assessments in place • Two full-time highly qualified teachers • Mobile lab of laptops with Chinese software purchased for each school • Full use of technology for communications and assessment • Full range of programs • Program sustainable with sufficient enrollments PAUSD Board Report - May 25, 2010

Elementary Program Progress • Planning program, hiring, enrolling 2007-08 • Implemented two K-1 classes 2008-09 • Developed M.I. assessment K-1 • Implemented two K-1, one grade 2 2009-10 • Mandarin curriculum standards K-3 • Assessment template for K-5 • Draft curriculum standards gr. 4-5 • Better Chinese print and on-line pilot • Planned for two K-1 and two 2-3 classes PAUSD Board Report - May 25, 2010

Elementary Program Summary - 2010 • Will serve 88 students in K-3 • Applications remain high (Eng = 43 for 14 seats; Mandarin = 26 for 8 seats) • Retention remains at or above 90% per year • Curriculum standards in place K-3; drafted 4-5 • Mandarin assessment template in place K-5 • Pilot of Better Chinese print and online system in place for 2010-2011 • Summer programs for students and teachers 2010 PAUSD Board Report - May 25, 2010

FLAP Grant No-Cost 4th Year Extension Approved: Carry over $120,000 to continue program development at elementary and middle school levels in 2010-2011 • Complete Mandarin Immersion curriculum standards gr. 4-6 • Adapt Chinese 1 curriculum for grades 7-8 • Complete Mandarin assessments for grades 3-5 • Support and training for new and continuing Mandarin immersion teachers • Increase technology use in immersion program PAUSD Board Report - May 25, 2010
