  3. Titles In Chinese, titles go after people’s surname. It is very impolite to call senior people by their first name. Mr. Lee  李先生Miss Wang  王小姐 General titles (e.g. client, stranger) Male 老先生 >先生> 小弟> 小朋友 Female 老太太 > 女士 > 小姐 > 小妹 > 小朋友

  4. Titles for more familiar peoplee.g. neighbors, best friends’ family 爺爺 > 伯伯> 叔叔> 大哥> 小 X (surname) 奶奶 > 伯母> 阿姨> 大姐> 小X (surname) Difference: 伯伯: he is older than my father 叔叔: he is younger than my father 大哥: he is older than me, a lot younger than my father

They are neighbours. • Mrs. Li is 20. Her father is 45. Mr. Wang is 50. They are neighbors. • Mrs. Li is 40. Mr. Wang is 20. They are colleagues. • Mrs. Li is 80. Mr. Wang is 20. They meet for the first time. • Mrs. Li is 45. Mr. Wang is 20. His mother is 50. The families are good friends. • Ms. Li, 25, is not married. Mr. Wang, 25, is her boyfriend.

  6. Greetings according to times • 早(安)。Good morning. (mainland)早上好。 (2) 午安。Good noon (11:00-13:00) (3) (mainland)晚上好。Good evening。 (4)晚安。Good night and goodbye.

  7. How do people actually say Hi to each other • 吃過了嗎？Had breakfast? 吃了。吃了一點。 還沒吃。 I did. Had a little. Not yet. (2)睡得好嗎？Had a good sleep? 很好 > 還可以 > 不太好 > 別提了。 Very good. OK. Not very good. Do not ask.

  11. How do people actually say Hi to each other (7) 太太好嗎？ 關你什麼事？她回娘家了。 Why do you care? She went back to her parents. 我們分居了。我們離婚了。 We are separated. We are divorced.
