The Book: • Same Size and Shape as Lutheran Worship • Color: Dark Burgundy • CPH chose a durable high-quality binding for a long-lasting book. • Light-weight paper for a book that weighs as little as possible for its size • Cream-white paper, instead of blue-white, and carefully chosen type-face for easy reading

  3. Why did synod compose a new Hymnal? • LCMS has been a church of 2 or more hymnals for over 25 years. • LSB combines the best of LCMS worship resources represented in TLH, LW, HS98.

  4. Why did synod compose a new Hymnal? • It includes a wealth of new hymns written by recent Lutheran composers. • New synod resources are planned to be written with references to LSB readings, hymn numbers, page numbers, etc. rather than the multiple hymnal references found in today’s publications.

  5. Development & History • 1997 – Planning process begins for a new hymnal • 1998 – Hymnal Supplement 98 published • 2001 – Field Testing Plan approved • 2004 – LSB approved by Synod Convention • 2006 – LSB officially released in print (1 year ahead of schedule)

  6. Simplified Numbering • 1-150 – Psalms • 151-330 – Services • 331-966 – Hymns • 990-1022 – Index • No number will be duplicated in this book. • Example: LW has Hymn 136, page 136, and Psalm 136. LSB will only have a single “136” which will be the Psalm.

  7. Psalms • Includes 107 Psalms, more than any previous LCMS hymnal • All 150 are in Pastor’s and Organists books

  8. Services • Divine Service, Setting 1 = LW p. 158 • Divine Service, Setting 2 = LW p. 178 • Divine Service, Setting 3 = TLH p. 15 • Divine Service, Setting 4 = Hymnal Supplement • Divine Service, Setting 5 = LW p. 197 (Luther’s “German Mass”)

  9. Services • Matins (combines LW and TLH) • Vespers (LW) • Morning Prayer (LW) • Evening Prayer (combines LW & HS98) • Compline (LW) • Service of Prayer and Preaching (New) • Daily Prayer for Individuals and Families (HS98 and New Material)

  10. Other Items • Luther’s Small Catechism • Expanded selection of occasional prayers • Creeds, Lord’s Prayer, and Prayers for Worship included inside front and back cover for easy access. • Confirmation and Baptism • Wedding and Funeral Services are in the book.

  11. Hymns • Over 500 hymns are returned from previous hymnals. (Including TLH and LW) • Many hymns have been restored to their original words and music. • Over 100 recent hymns have been added. • New Hymns have been introduced for use with difficult-to-match scripture readings

  12. Scripture Readings • Similar to schedule from LW • Slight revisions • More scripture per service • Better match between Old Testament and Gospel • New Translation • English Standard Version replaces NIV

  13. Miscellaneous Features • Bible references are provided in liturgy and hymns. • Significant Improvements to Pastor’s and Musicians’ books • Electronic Edition “Lutheran Service Builder” • Artwork, prayers, or Bible verses were used to fill blank portions of pages.

  14. What are the plans for the LSB at St. John’s? • 5 Hymnals and 1 Bible per pew. • Funded by “Hymnal Fund” and special memorials. Supplemental funding could be accessed from the excess paint fund if necessary. • Purchase hymnal as soon as funds are raised. • Begin using Hymnal Pentecost 2007 (May 27)

Top Five Benefits for St. John’s • Will match new synod resources which will reference LSB only • Corrects some mistakes made in past hymnals • Ease of use for visitors and members • Use only one book in services and cut down on printing hymn inserts • Familiar services, new hymns, and old favorites are all included with only minor changes
