Module 11: Inflamatory responses • Inflammatory responses • The innate immune system is our first line of defense against invading pathogens. • Initiates a vigorous and rapid inflammatory response to attack foreign pathogens • Plays a key role in activating the more slowly developing adaptive immune response. • Activation of specific B and T cells to extend the host defense system • Innate response is carried out by a complex series of cellular interactions, collectively known as the inflammatory response. • Cellular players in the innate immune response/inflamatory response are: • Blood platelets • Macrophages • Mast cells • Neutrophils • Endothelial cells Cell Signalling Biology - Michael J.
