Objectives: Apply a principled approach to managing free kicks • Consistently, predictably and fairly • Following the Laws of the Game • Showing concern for the integrity of the game
You have awarded a FK... My assumptions: • Your Proximity - less than 5 seconds • Timing to restart • Ball is Stationary • Defenders are moving away
Considerations during a FK • Critically important areas • When does distance matter • Players positions & antics • Procedures to follow • Must I intervene?
When does distance matter? • Always
Critically Important Areas • Ball position • Wall • Offside • Goal line • GK interference • AR - if there is one
Players (Defenders and Attackers) • relative positions • actions / antics • type of game • time remaining • pace of game • score
Procedure at Free Kick “Ceremonial” = when attacker requests 10 yards “Quick” = attackers are taking it now or sooner In both circumstances: Decide if you must intervene • If you must intervene, be seen as consistently efficient • Position yourself to see the critically important areas
Intervene when: • Attacker requests distance as defenders have not appropriately retreated • Attacker inappropriately places the ball • When you deem it necessary
Positioning "The best position is one in which the referee can take the right decision” A – at an angle to play B – between players to see the ball C – clear unobstructed view D – distance is reasonable E – expected zone of play (where will it likely go next)
