Theater Zuidplein – Rotterdam (1) • In 1998 the City Council of Rotterdam appointed Theater Zuidplein as the main venue for cultural diversity • within a few years more than half of the Rotterdam population will be of a non-Dutch origin • Theater Zuidplein has since focused mainly on the principal ethnic populations in the city: people from Turkish, Moroccan, Surinam, Antillean and Cape Verdian cultural backgrounds.

PROGRAMMING COMMITTEE • established in 1998 to achieve public involvement in the programming of the theatre • Objective: The programming committee aims to create a programme corresponding to the needs of the local population • Theater Zuidplein as a ‘Theatre on Demand’
How it works … (1) • makes autonomous decisions about the programming. However, the ultimate responsibility, financially and artistically, lies in the hands of the director • the composition should reflect the population of Rotterdam • for word-of-mouth publicity, have a proven large following and broad contact net
How it works … (2) • do not receive any financial remuneration • no more than 10 people • membership lasts for a maximum of four years.
Theater Zuidplein – Rotterdam (3) • Cultural Specials • from mono-culture to interculture • linking the city, weaving the audience
Autonomous organisations • main reason for contact with these associations is to organize festivals • to compile the programme for a “cultural special” • presently an artistic director is recruited locally from the chosen culture • with a broad cultural interest and not connected to any political party
Cultural Specials • inviting companies/artists from the country of origin or elsewhere in Europe • engaging in co-productions • a broad programme which reflects the target group • something to suit the taste of the different generations • empowerment
Producing • producing and co-producing • Cultural Specials; local, national and international • local: ‘young’ talent
Effect on the organization • change of attitude • change of staff; from 2% to 26% • change of venue • change of programme; from 1% to 30% • change of profile; from deficit to profit • change of funds and financing • political backing
Spin-off … • intensive interaction during organization of culture specials creates a bond with and trust in the theatre • their help can be enlisted to reach the grass roots for performances that are part of the normal programme during the theatre season • In return, some of them use the theatre for organizing their own cultural activities and events.
