“This I Believe” • Quickwrite: What are some of the beliefs you hold that affect your daily choices, how you interact with others, or how you see the world? • They can be BIG beliefs (“I believe that my grandmother is watching over me”) small beliefs (“I believe dairy products are the root of all evil”) or somewhere in between (“I believe that a little kindness goes a long way”). • Make as long a list as you can, and be serious about it. You will not have to share this whole list with anyone.
“This I Believe” • From http://www.npr.org/series/4538138/this-i-believe. • Listen to the podcasts. • Take (Cornell) notes as you listen: • How does the writer develop his/her idea? • What details stick out? • What makes each essay WORK? • What could make it better?
Assignment Guidelines • Let’s read through these as a class. • Guess what this is? This is an ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION. Which means you’re all going to be writing—and performing—a “This I Believe” speech!
So let’s get started… • Use your paper to brainstorm. • Make two columns. • In the first column, write down things you believe in so strongly you feel like you could write about them at length. • In the second column, write down specific incidents in your life that relate to these beliefs. • Brainstorm a bunch of ideas; then choose one to focus on.
After you get done brainstorming/drafting… • Start writing a rough draft of your “This I Believe” essay on a sheet of paper. • Think about what worked in the essays you listened to; how can you use their strategies to make your own “This I Believe” more effective? • If you finish, SWITCH it with someone you trust to look at your work. • Give your partner feedback on capitalization, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, etc. • Give them some ideas about how they might make their final draft more detailed or engaging.
