1.SELECT A GOAL TO WORK ON. 1. Set Performance goals, not outcome goals -Set goals you have control over and don’t depend on others. Example: I want to get into shape. 2. Be Specific (measurable goals) If you achieve, you can be confident and comfortable with it. If you fail you can adjust it or analyze the reason and take action to improve. 3. Write them down: -Accountability, Commitment, Avoid Confusion
2. List what you will do to reach the goal 1. Break it down into small manageable tasks. -Too large a goal seems that you aren’t making progress. 2. When thinking about how to achieve your goals ask yourself the following questions: What skills do I need to achieve this? What information and knowledge do I need? What help, assistance or collaboration do I need? What resources do I need? What can block progress? Am I making any assumptions? Is there a better way of doing things?
3. Identify sources of help and support. Guard your goals Find positive people Get rid of negative energy
4. Set a reasonable time frame for reaching your goals. 1. Don’t let it drag on. 2. Set Priorities: where you have several goals give each a priority – 1) this helps you to avoid feeling overwhelmed 2) directs your attention to the most important
5. Establish check points along the journey. 1. Evaluate your progress -Review and update your to do list on a daily basis -What is working- keep -What is not working -what do you need to do different? -Adjust goals -Refocus
6. Reward yourself 1. After reaching your goal! 2. Congratulate yourself and award yourself appropriately 3. Helps you work harder…
Feedback: Failure Make sure you learn the lessons of the failure. May be -you didn’t try hard enough -your technique or skill was faulty -your knowledge was faulty and needs to be enhanced -the goal you set was unrealistic Use the information to adjust your goals – it’s a learning process. Remember that the fact of trying something, even if it does not work, often opens up doors that would otherwise have remained closed.
Feedback: Success If the goal was easily achieved, make your next goal harder. If the goal took a dispiriting length of time to achieve, make the next goal a little easier. If you learned something that would lead you to change goals still outstanding, do so. If while achieving your goal you noticed a deficit in your skills, set goals to fix this.
KEYS TO SUCCESS • Do not fear failure: Failure is just another chance to start again more intelligently. • Be determined: Tackle obstacles with confidence. Try a different approach-ask for help-keep on truckin’. • Do not invite failure: setting unrealistic goals. Putting obstacles in your own path. • Be patient: Most goals worth achieving take time and hard work. Climb step by step.
