OPERATION DUTY -Front-Ends System (H-Source) -Linac -Transfer and Stripping -Neutron Target *Main Objective: Accelerate Safe Beam to Neutron Target Facility. *Make sure of the beam areas are safe: -PPS (Personnel Protection System) -Patrol before beam -Radiation Survey before Access *Monitor the Accelerator Facilities (identify, troubleshoot and report failures) *Intervene or Call specialists in case of necessity SNS / F.Chapuis

OPERATION GROUP Operation Group composed by 18 peoples Group Leader Machine Specialist - Day - Maintenance/Operability Coordinator - Day - Operation Coordinator - Day - Control Room Shift Supervisor (10) - Shifter - Control Room Accelerator Specialist (5) - Shifter - → 15 peoples making 5 Shift Crews of 3 operators SNS / F.Chapuis
SHIFT CREW Details Provide SNS Monitoring 24h/Day and 7d/week. *2 Shifts alternating = 12 hours (6:00/18:20– 18:00/6:20) - (+20min overlap) *Crew composed by: -3 operators from Op-Group (present in CR) -3 on-shift supports *Operators Crew composition in Normal Operation (= Neutron Prod.) : -1 Shift Supervisor (as Chief Leader) -1 Shift Supervisor -1 Accelerator Specialist *The crew composition may vary within Accelerator Start-up/Restore: from 1 to 3 ops. *On-Shift Supports composition: -1 RCT – Radiological Control Technician -1 OST – Operations Shift Technician -1 IHC – Instrument Hall Coordinator SNS / F.Chapuis

SAFETY SYSTEM → PPS PPS = PERSONNEL PROTECTION SYSTEM Accelerator Facility divided in 4 zones: Linac, HEBT (Injection line), Ring, RTBT (Extraction line) Functions: -Protect personnel from prompt radiation (beam operation) -Protect personnel from equipment hazards (RF Klystron, energized cables) -Shut off beam if equipment fault cause an abnormal radiation level -Warn personnel in zone before beam operation Technology: -Fail safe -Redundant PLC for each zone with separate network ways -No Hardware Loop -Linked with MPS (Machine Protection System) Operation: -Operating Modes (search, restricted access, power permit, beam permit,…) -Beam Containment Modes ( Ion source conditioning, Linactuning, Full operation,…) SNS / F.Chapuis
EQUIPMENT FAILURE / TROUBLESHOOTING Equipment Failure - BEAST - Voice Message Beam cut by MPS Shift Crew Diagnostic MPS (Machine Protection System) protects the machine against beam Damage. MPS acquires status from several sensitive equipment, such as: -Power converts, -RF Hi and Low-Level, -Instrumentation: BLMs, BPMs,… -etc MPS may cut the beam (2 alarm levels) Remote Troubleshooting Not ok ok Specialist Intervention Staggered Beam Recovery Logbook Input SNS / F.Chapuis
