  2. What is Coeliac disease? Coeliac disease is a disease of the small intestine.

  3. How is it caused? • Coeliac disease is caused when there is an allergic reaction, within the inner lining of the small intestine to proteins. • There is evidence that this reaction is partially genetic and partially inherited.

  4. What might happen if it was left untreated? • The damage to the small intestine can become chronic and LIFE threatening. • The Villi in the small intestine become inflamed and flatten together. In more serious cases they can even disappear. • You can also suffer from Osteoporosis, this is weakness of the bones.Anaemia, growth defects, infertility and types of cancer.

  5. Different types of the condition… • There are no other types of Coeliac disease. However there are more severe forms. Most cases are very mild and some may even go unnoticed, as there are no symptoms are diagnosed. • Symptoms… diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, excessive wind, stomach pains, cramping, bloating. Symptoms will be worse with a more severe case of Coeliac disease.

  6. What should you do if you have this condition… • The first thing you should do is consult a doctor and get tested to confirm whether or not you have the disease. • Speak to your doctor and find out from them what foods you are able to eat and what you must avoid. • Switch to a Gluten-free diet.

  7. Foods to AVOID • Avoid food that contain wheat: pizza, bread, cereal, biscuits, crackers, cakes, pies, gravy and sauces. Unless they are gluten free. • Avoid wheat-free foods;

  8. Nutritional health • Without enough nutrients the individuals body wont be strong enough and has a tough time staying healthy and may effect your growth. • It may mean that the person will spend a lot of time off work or school/education. Therefore, the person will feel frustrated. • Not getting enough energy, there are visible signs for example the person wont be getting nourished.
