  2. Causes • Floods occur when so much water pours into a stream or river that it overflows its banks and covers the land on either side of the channel • Flash flood- a sudden, violent flood that occurs within a few hours, or even minutes of a storm

  10. Predicting Floods • Scientists use weather satellites, radar, and rain gauges to predict flood heights along a river. • Flood watch- announcement that a flood is possible • Flood warning- floods have been reported-take action!

  11. Other flood hazards • Electrical poles and wires can fall and cut off power or cause electrocution • Can cause landslides or mudslides • Can pollute water. Boil water before drinking.
