  2. Overview: Calculate your daily load in Amp Hours Calculate your battery bank size Check your batteries and alternator Reduce consumption = weight savings Increase charging cap. = weight savings Check your wiring and cables

  3. Why Bad Things Happen: Can you spot the problem in this picture ?

  4. Stock alternator / lead acid batts: Typical 3 cylinder diesel with 35A alt: Sample 50 amp Hrs / day load Batteries 80% efficient +/- 2.0 hours run time to recharge 1.0 gal / hour fuel consumption 2 gallons x 7.5 lbs / gallon = 15lbs/day 15 days fuel = 30 gal = 225lbs fuel load .3 lbs per Amp Hour used

  5. 150A alternator / AGM batts: Typical 3 cylinder diesel / 150A alt: Sample 50 amp Hrs / day load Batteries 90% efficient +/- .5 hours run time to recharge 1.0 gal / hour fuel consumption .5 gal x 7.5 lbs / gallon = 3.75lbs/day 15 days fuel = 7.5 gal = 56lbs fuel load .07 lbs per Amp Hour used 5

  6. Bad Wiring examples :

  7. Possible Intermittent Connections: 7

  8. Corrosion Examples – Chainplates 8

  9. Galvanic Corrosion : Dissimilar metals in electrical contact, immersed in electrolyte. Each component of slightly different composition and alloys. Lack of proper protection causes more noble parts to attack other components in the assembly. On the inside, internal leaks, and exposure to high concentrations of salty bilgewater, accelerate the process. Most common form of attack to marine metals

  10. In Conclusion : Determine your consumption Calculate your fuel load Check or replace your batteries Carry spares to make basic repairs
