RECAP • God’s Life-Changing Power (Rom 6-8) • A. Dead to Sin, Alive to God (Rom 6:1-11) • 1. Baptism (Rom 6:1-4) • 2. Dead to the old life of sin and alive to the new life in Jesus Christ (Rom 6:5- 11).
RECAP • B. Live Righteously (Rom 6:12-14) • 1. Sin should not reign in our bodies (v.12). • 2. Do not submit to activities of sin, but to God in righteousness (v.13). • 3. Do not allow sin to dominate you (v.14).
RECAP • How will we achieve this way of life? • How will be victorious over sin in our lives? • Through the Holy Spirit!!!
RECAP • C. The Holy Spirit indwells each Believer • 1. The victory that we have in Christ comes through the Holy Spirit who indwells and gives us power to overcome sin. • 2. The most notable blessing of the Holy Spirit is not in gifts of the spirit, but in his effectual working that brings about the righteousness of God in our lives.
Romans: Overview (Part 2) • I. God’s Election • A. “election”: God’s sovereign choosing. (Eph. 1:3-6) • B. God elected the people through whom he would unveil his plan of salvation (Rom 9:6- 13). • 1. Abraham • 2. Isaac • 3. Jacob
Romans: Overview (Part 2) • C. God’s election is a matter of God’s sovereign choice and is not dependent on God’s foreknowledge of man’s behavior (Rom. 9:14-18). • D. God elects for his glory and as a show of his mercy (Rom 9:19-24). • -- “Buckets” example
Romans: Overview (Part 2) • II. Jews Reject God, Gentles Grafted in • A. Gentiles did not have the law. In faith, they look to Jesus as the source of their righteousness (Rom 9:30). • B. Jews were given the law and sought to obtain righteousness by works. Therefore, they rejected Christ (Rom 9:31-32; Rom 10:3- 4).
Romans: Overview (Part 2) • C. Everyone who calls on the name of Jesus, in faith, shall be saved (Rom 10:9-13). • D. If Jews or Gentiles continue in sin, they will be cut off from God (Rom 10:17-23).
Romans: Overview (Part 2) • Q: How are we to understand our relationship with the Jews? • “As regards the gospel, they are enemies of God for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” • Romans 11:28-29 • Evangelize them, but expect hostility toward Jesus • Care about what happens to Israel—God does.
