Step By Step Through the New Testament Lesson 8 Matthew: Jesus’ Other Teachings • Rev. Christopher J. Respass • Antioch Bible Institute • Fall 2013
Kingdom of God A. Sowing the Kingdom (Matt 13:1-23) 1. Different types of soil a) path: hearing without understanding. b) rocky ground—no spiritual depth c) thorns—cares of the world d) good soil—fertile, welcoming heart These “soils” represent the different responses to the Kingdom. Matthew: Jesus’ Other Teachings
2. Seed Quality (Matt 13:24-30) a) The master sows good seed. b) The enemy sows weeds/tares. Matthew: Jesus’ Other Teachings
3. Seed Productivity (Matt. 13:8) a) All good seed sown on good soil will produce fruit. b) Good seed sown on good soil will not produce to the exact same degree (e.g., some a hundredfold (100), some sixty (60) and some thirty (30)). Matthew: Jesus’ Other Teachings
Peter’s Confession that Jesus is Messiah (Matt. 16:13-20). A. Peter declares that Jesus is the “the Christ, the Son of the living God.” B. Jesus declares that “you are Peter and on this rock, I will build my church….” (v.18). What is “this rock”? What does it mean? Matthew: Jesus’ Other Teachings
C. There are four leading interpretations of “this rock”: 1. Peter’s confession that Jesus is “the Christ.” 2. Jesus is himself “the rock.” 3. Peter, as the representative apostle, is the founder or foundation in/of the church. 4. By his confession, Peter represents they type of person on which the true church will be built. Matthew: Jesus’ Other Teachings
III. The Keys to the Kingdom (Matt. 16:19). A. “Keys” represent authority. B. Contemporary use of the terms “binding and loosing” centers around addressing activity in the spiritual realm. Here, the discussion is about church and admission to God’s kingdom. Thus, the “binding and loosing” Jesus is referring to has to do with the right to retain or forgive sins. Matthew: Jesus’ Other Teachings
C. The decision to retain or forgive sins belongs to God alone, but Jesus did give Peter (as representative) the authority to proclaim forgiveness and declare the terms of admission into God’s kingdom. D. Thus, as the apostles and early church proclaimed forgiveness through the gospel, people were granted forgiveness and loosed from their sins. Matthew: Jesus’ Other Teachings
Self-Denial & Cross Bearing (Matt. 16:24-28) A. Self-Denial. Jesus taught that we need to deny quests for materialism (wealth), egotism (self), and worldliness/immorality. B. Cross Bearing. Taking up one’s cross means that we knowingly expose ourselves to suffering for Jesus and we accept that as the cost of walking with Jesus. Matthew: Jesus’ Other Teachings
