The Program • This is an exciting program which will make a difference in schools and in classrooms • We need it to make a significant difference – our students are relying on it • Times are changing but many classrooms are not – we need to be a conduit of change • We need to coach teachers so that their students learn how to enquire, think, research and become a part of our modern society

The Previous Situation We currently have educators associated with each school in SMR. • Bayside – 2 • Berwick – 6 • Cranbourne – 4 • Dandenong – 3 • Frankston – 5 • Glen Eira – 3 • Kingston – 3 • Inner South – 3 • Mornington – 6 • Springvale – 3 Distribution is approximately equal for all schools. Total educators = 38

  4. The 2008 Situation • In SMR, coaches will focus on • Maths and Science • School improvement • Youth Commitment • Building teacher and school capacity • The Ultranet • Regeneration projects

Accountabilities – Teaching & Learning Coaches • To coach and mentor teachers in a one-to-one situation • To build teachers’ disciplinary and pedagogical content knowledge and their repertoire of high quality teaching practices. • To collaborate with teachers to plan and deliver curriculum and to provide feedback on the quality of curriculum delivery. • To support teachers to implement differentiation of curriculum to meet the diverse needs of students in their class. • To support teachers to develop rich assessment tasks and to utilise data effectively to inform curriculum planning and delivery and to monitor student learning. • To promote and implement existing DEECD policy and resources. • To assist participating schools to implement practices that sustain improvement beyond the funded period of the initiative.

Accountabilities – Ultranet Coaches • To deliver high quality role based training to Ultranet users across the region including Principals, teachers, SSOs, regional and central office personnel. • To work directly with the Ultranet System Integrator learning how to effectively use the Ultranet system as a Super User in role based training. • To monitor effectiveness of training delivery and provision of support and to use this knowledge to improve on future delivery of training • To provide high level support for the DoE Ultranet through provision of appropriate processes and activities in an efficient and timely manner. • To work collaboratively as part of a team in delivering training about the Ultranet.

Employment Issues • Teaching and Learning Coaches and Ultranet Trainers - LT1 salary – Salary Maintenance • The Team Leaders - AP1 salary – paid as higher duties (Julie, Leonie, David, Angeliki) • There will be four team leaders across the Region • At the end of the 2 years, the coaches and trainers will return to their school unless the program is rolled over • Two to four or more coaches at a base school • All coaches will be paid from SMR – Greg Ivill is the reference for HR issues

  9. Laptops and Phones • These will be provided to coaches and trainers • Keep your notebook until the new one arrives! • Mobiles available from day 1 from SMR

  10. Professional Development of Coaches Approx 3 days of induction and 7 days of PD provided by SMR 8-10 days of professional development provided by the Centre Some PD will be during school holidays

  11. Management of Coaches Program overseen by SDU Manager Program focus + area focus Sub Region Management Team: SEOs / Network Chairs / SDU Staff Member / Team Leader • Ultranet Management: • – Likely to have a central focus • –Also managed in the Sub Region

Which coach is most appropriate for the school and the issue? Coach and school work together Memorandum Of Understanding developed What data will be collected to show the improvement? Key Points • Schools need to have the capacity to have a coach • The Principal must actively support the program • The coach is to be supported by the school • An MOU will be in place for each school • The school will provide any materials required in the program • PD will be paid for by the school/Region depending on what it is

Key Points • The school will need to know the data they wish to improve • Data is to be made available to the coach • If problems occur, see your team leader asap • The team leader and the SEO will address problems with the school • Team meetings will be conducted regularly by the team leader and/or the SDU

Sub-Regions In 2008, the Innovation and Excellence Program in SMR will operate out of three sub-regions Inner Sub-Region Bayside, Kingston Glen Eira & Inner South Networks Outer Sub-Region Berwick, Cranbourne Dandenong & Springvale Networks Peninsula Sub-Region Frankston & Mornington Networks
