Raise Hope for Wadi Al NakhlaFundraising for Syrian refugee children Arab Students’ Association (ASA) Syria Committee & TAMU-UNICEF Maggy Ibrahim & Nahua Kang
Current Situation of Syrian Refugees • Syrian Refugees: Drowning in the Flood • More than 1.1 million refugees have fled the border, many more not registered as refugee status • Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey host almost all the refugees • Psychological trauma and severe living condition trouble the refugee children • UNHCR (United Nations Refugee Agency) is receiving only 3% of the 1.5 Billion fund it asked for • UNICEF appealed for $195 million to help meet the needs of Syrian children and women until the end of June but thus far has only received about 20% of the needed funding
Our vision/what we do: • Raise money for one of the UNICEF schools locate in Lebanon • Raise global awareness in A&M community • Support the mission of UNICEF • Protect the children of Syria
Case Study: Wadi Al Nakhla Public School • A public school located near Tripoli, Lebanon • Child-friendly Spaces supported by UNICEF • Focuses on building refugee children’s self-confidence and relationships for children who might feel inferior as refugees • Donations from us will have an impact on children at Wadi Al Nakhla
Hear the children’s voices: • “My house in Syria is invaded by mice, so my father forced us to move as quickly as we could to Lebanon until he finds a solution to disinfect our home.” • “There was a lot of shooting and bombs where we lived in Syria and even the mosque was destroyed. It was terrible and I saw homeless children in the streets, children who didn’t have food.” • “When my school was destroyed, my dream of becoming a doctor was destroyed” • “I’m very happy that school has started; I enjoy Arabic and writing the most. I would like to be an Arabic teacher.”
