HISTORY Kazakhstan has been inhabited since the Stone Age the region's climate and terrain are best suited for nomads practising pastoralism. There are a lot of really old cities, such as Taraz(VII-VIII centuries BC), Turkestan(500). Real political consolidation only began with the Mongol invasion of the early thirteenth century AD. Government and politics Kazakhstan is a presidential republic. The president is the head of state. The president also is the commander in chief of the armed forces and may veto legislation that has been passed by the Parliament. Geography With an area of 2.7 million square kilometers(1.05 million sq. mi), Kazakhstan is the ninth-largest country in the world. The terrain extends west to east from the Caspian Sea to the Altay Mountains and north to south from the plains of Western Siberia to the oases and deserts of Central Asia. ECONOMY Energy is the leading economic sector. Production of crude oil and natural gas condensate in Kazakhstan amounted to 51.2 million tons in 2003, which was 8.6% more than in 2002. CULTURE In the national cuisine, livestock meat can be cooked in a variety of ways and is usually served with a wide assortment of traditional bread products.
