  5. Characteristics of Exceptionally Gifted Students • The characteristics are generalized • Students may have only one or possibly several of the characteristics • The unique mix of characteristics for each child makes them all very unique

  6. Vary Socially • Outgoing • Hesitant and unsure of other children • May take time to find their feet • Introverted

  7. Activity Levels Vary • High activity level, low impulse control making one wonder about ADD/ADHD • Introverts may be very calm and reflective

  8. Strong Sense of Justice • May get upset if something is perceived as “unfair” • May seem too serious for their age – worrying about moral, ethical or philosophical questions • Might sound like a little lawyer when explaining their side of a disagreement

  10. Perfectionism • Expecting way too much of himself and others • May not understand why others break rules

  11. Extreme Sensitivity • Tags in clothing are very irritating • Cannot tolerate loud noises • Singing off key may really irritate them • Extreme allergies • Extremely sensitive to odors

  17. BRIEF OVERVIEW • MOSAICS Academy is designed to meet needs of highly/exceptionally gifted learners • 3 classrooms/3 teachers • 5 – full day program • Differentiated/Accelerated Curriculum

  18. CURRICULUM • Adapted to IB Philosophy of learning • Inquiry-based • Mostly Interdisciplinary • Emphasizes individualization • Aligned to state/district standards • Embeds grade-level expectations at accelerated pace.

DAILY SCHEDULE • School hours – 7:55 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (children can enter building at 7:35 a.m.) • Lunch and breakfast are served • Children may attend Art, Music, PE, lunch and/or recess with a grade below or above them • 3rd grade – Suzuki • 4th/5th grade – Orchestra • After school child care available through YMCA

  21. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS… • Homework – each classroom teacher may vary. However, the Academy’s philosophy is that homework is a means for building responsibility and independence; it can also provide the additional practice that some children may need in order to meet grade level expectations; should be kept minimal.
