Status of the FETS Radio Frequency Quadrupole Ajit Kurup UKNFIC Meeting 20th October 2005
Introduction • RFQ requirements: Bunch and accelerate 65mA beam from 65keV to 3MeV. • Resonant frequency is 324MHz. • Can have a either a rod type or vane type rfq. • The plan was • Do simulations for both types to get a design that resonates at the correct frequency. The designs have to include tuning, power coupling ports and vacuum ports and other engineering features. • Build models of both designs to test the accuracy of the simulations. • Optimise the q-value of the designs. Electromagnetic Simulations • Use Inventor to draw a 3D model and import this into the program that will do the electromagnetic simulation. • Eliminates the need to duplicate the drawing in different programs. • Easier to get engineering features in the model. • MAFIA was originally used to do the simulations. • Solves Maxwell’s equations (using the finite integration method) to get the resonant frequency. • Geometry needs to be discretised. Conclusions and Future Plans • Simulations have been done for a 4 vane and 4 rod rfq to obtain designs that resonate at 324 MHz. • 4 vane cold model is about to be manufactured • Optimise tuning of the 4 vane model for q-value. • 4 rod design needs cooling and tuning. Ajit Kurup
