UEMS Charter on CME (1994) • CME is an ethical and moral obligation • CME organized, managed and supervised by the profession • Voluntary participation • Incentives for undertaking CME • Specialist not taking part in CME cannot lose status as a doctor or specialist • Quality controlled by the profession
UEMS Basel Declaration (2001) • The UEMS defines CPD as the educative means of updating, developing and enhancing how doctors apply the knowledge, skills and attitudes required in their working lives. • The goal of CPD is to improve all aspects of a medical practitioner’s performance in his/her work.
European Accreditation Council for C M E Purpose UEMS policy • Contribute to quality and harmonization of CME in Europe • To make life easier for our colleagues by easing access to international CME • Developing quality guidelines • Maintaining national authority
E A C C M E Purpose UEMS policy • Same procedure for each Specialty • Same procedure for each Country • Harmonisation of the fees • Avoid multiplication of the process • Have one entry
Minimal Criteria • Non-biased education • Control of attendance • Report after the event • Have clear learning objectives • Precise the target audience
Harmonization : Why ? European Union : 27 Member States European Economic Area : 3 States Devolution : States can be divided into regions that have the authority to decide on CME issues Specialization : in some states, the process is organized on the base of the Specialty
Mutual Recognition • Based on trust • Similar criteria • Different Health Care Systems • Must be only a part of the entire « portfolio » of the Physicians • Borders are vanishing
