This presentation content focuses on designing a comprehensive unit of work covering Algebra and number patterns for Year 7 students. It includes insights on students' prior knowledge and attitudes, alternative unit plans such as creating patterns and an Algebra Walk, and various assessment methods like projects, presentations, and concept maps. The impact of hands-on activities on student performance is also analyzed through student feedback and comparison of results. The engaging activities and assessments aim to enhance understanding and academic performance in Algebra and Patterns.

“AHA” Engineering Maths Moments Year 7 - Number and Patterns
Presentation Content • Prior Knowledge and students attitude to Algebra and number Patterns • Designing a unit of work that covers all areas • Assessment and results • Student Feed back
Unit of Work Alternative unit plan – Algebra
Creating Patterns • Working in groups year 7’s created different patterns • Over two lessons they explored the patterns followed by recording it in their books. • Some students were given the opportunity to graph the results to observe the linear relationship
Algebra Walk • Great activity before introducing graphing linear equations and forming tables. • Some students understood the concept of gradient and some even non linear equations • Year 7’s love being outside on “Friday Fun Day”
Alternative Assessments • Project and presentation • Concept Maps • Test ( for comparison)
Test • When comparing the two year seven classes there was not a significant difference in the results. • Both of the classes have similar results, this is likely to be due to the revision test which is similar to the actual test. • But the class which engaged more in “hand on activities” performed better in concept mapping and the project assessment.
