New Initiatives in the Budget New Initiatives in Budget • Elementary STEAM teacher • Elementary STEAM lab equipment and supplies • Sixth grade 1:1 Chromebook initiative • Boys’ Seventh and Eighth Grade Volleyball Team • Additional 0.5 Psychologist for Middle School • High School AP Capstone Program • New high school courses that include Robotics, Engineering, and Virtual Enterprises • Musical instruments district wide • Instructional technology • New textbooks
Elementary STEAM Initiative • Creation of an elementary STEAM program • Additional teacher support • Resources to ensure the success of the program • Enriched curricular STEAM units
Middle School Chromebook and Instructional Technology Initiatives • All students in grade six will be provided with a Chromebook for use at school and at home • Staff will enhance lessons to provide blended learning experiences to all their 6th grade classes • 6th graders will continue to use their Chromebooksthrough the 8th grade • Chromebookswill be distributed to each new 6th grade class in future years
New High School Courses • Enhance the Technology Department course offerings by adding two new courses in robotics and engineering • AP Capstone • A new business college level course, Virtual Enterprises, is being added as well
Emphasizes Critical Skills Needed for College & Beyond Introducing AP Capstone AP Capstone is an innovative program that helps you stand out in the college admissions process by developing the critical skills needed to succeed in college and in your future career. Two new courses—AP Seminar and AP Research—allow students to immerse themselves in topics that matter to them, while they develop the analytic, research, problem-solving, and communication skills that colleges seek in their applicants.
Virtual Enterprises International • Virtual Enterprises is a live global business simulation that is project-based and collaborative • Empowers students to handle the responsibilities related to running a business
Musical Instruments • There are many musical instruments that have gone beyond their useful life and can no longer be repaired • We will continue a regular replacement plan to update our inventory

Class of 2015Academics • 93% of Class of 2015 enrolled in at least one college level or Advanced Placement course • 77 students earned the designation of AP Scholar or higher by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional performance on the AP exams • AP courses: 96 seniors took 2 courses, 69 seniors took 3 or more, 52 took 4 or more, and 37 took 5 or more

Tax Freeze Credit Law - Expired • The two-year tax freeze credit law has expired. • Taxpayers in Wantagh received tax freeze credit payments from New York State in 2015 and 2016. • Wantagh school district met the eligibility requirements in both years of the law • Wantagh’s tax levy was below the tax cap limit • Wantagh worked with a group of local school districts to prepare a Cooperative Government Efficiency Plan
Tax Property Tax Rebate - New • Effective 2016-17: • New York State tax rebate payments • Up to $130 for eligible taxpayers in year one • Sliding scale payments beginning in year two based on a percentage of STAR credit – changing to an income tax credit • Taxpayer eligibility includes: • STAR eligibility 2016 • Income level (<$500K 2016, <$275K 2017-2019) • Wantagh’s tax levy is below the tax cap limit
Tax Levy and LIPA/PSEG PILOT • LIPA/PSEG challenged the tax assessment for certain properties • Nassau County settled a lawsuit and agreed to remove those properties from the County tax roll • LIPA/PSEG agreed to pay an assessment of these properties this year through a PILOT agreement • “Nassau County Guarantee” to school districts for full payment of the tax levy was violated • Legal challenge by school districts • Future payments are now less certain

Gap Elimination Adjustment:Full Restoration -$0 ! • Gap Elimination Adjustment (“GEA”) Restoration: • Governor’s Proposal – • The Governor’s proposal restored $327,016 of Wantagh’s GEA, leaving a GEA of $745,580. The Governor’s $327,016 restoration was built into the preliminary budget as an offset to the levy. • Legislative Budget - • Restores $625,248, leaving a GEA balance of $447,348. • Includes a “final GEA payment” of $447,348 for 2016-17. • Recent guidance indicates that this restoration is “permanent,” and that it would require new legislation to bring back the GEA. • State Aid reductions of $2,433 in a few minor aid categories also reported. Based on this recent guidance, our long-term projections now assume that the GEA is fully restored beginning in 2016-17 and continuing into future years.
