  2. The Ob River • Origin: Russia • Empties into the Estuary on the Arctic Ocean • World’s fourth longest river –hundreds of miles • Frozen for half of the year • Can only travel for a few months a year! • Important for transportation

The Yellow River • Origin: China • Empties into the Bo Hai ( arm of the Yellow Sea) • Area used by early Chinese civilization • Known as China’s Sorrow-because of damage caused by so much flooding • Lots of silt-makes it look yellow • Irrigation for crops • Created delta known as the Great China Plain • Dam used to harness water for electric power

  6. The Yangtze River • Origin: China • Empties into the East China Sea • Longest river in Asia • Third longest in the world! • Very wild water • Three Gorges Dam—will be largest dam/22 football fields wide • 40%or China’s electric power

The Ganges River • Origin: Himalayas • Empties into the Joins Brahmaputra in Bangladesh • Empties into the Bay of Bengal • Holy river to Hindus • Thought of as reincarnation of Hindu deity, Ganga • Irrigation source for India and Bangladesh • Poets have written songs and poems about it • Fountains and statues have been carved to honor it • Mother Ganges –brings life to the land • Still has water even when hot and dry • Silt forms a delta

The Indus River • Origin: Tibet region of China • Joins five smaller rivers and empties into the Arabian Sea • Now in country of Pakistan • Water from the river in underground pipes filled the large public bath that was the size of a pool • Only small ships • Irrigation and hydroelectric power
