Purpose • General lighting – background or ambient lighting. Produces enough light to see everything in the room • Task lighting – focuses light on an area where it is most needed for a specific task • Accent lighting – create a dramatic effect
Sources of light • Natural light – sunlight through windows or doors • Artificial light – lamps & light fixtures • Incandescent - warm & flattering • Fluorescent – produce more light; last longer; blueish cast • Halogen – more efficient; whiter & more intense light; become very hot • Fiber optics – rope lighting; use for displays • LED’s – Light emitting diode; lasts 10 times as long as fluorescent bulbs
