Afterslip Modelling Meeting 1 of 4 Introduction to Rate and State Friction laws
Why are we here? • Many of the postseismic studies I am looking at could involve afterslip modelling • Events I intend to study include • 1997 Manyi Earthquake (7.6) • 1996 Earthquake de Tim (western Tibet) (6.9) • 2009 L’Aquila Earthquake (6.3) • 1997 Zirkuh Earthquake (7.7?)
Afterslip – what is it? • Slip on the fault plane (or extend of it with depth and laterally) which is not associated with seismic moment release • Model using elastic dislocation theory • Basically same as a slip distribution for coseismic event. The size of slip patches is currently chosen arbitrarily.
Examples from Literature • Landers • Hector Mine • Izmit (early signal) • Manyi (early signal) • Chi-Chi
Friction • The A-level approach • Block Sliders
