Planning • Now that you have identified your project, some objectives, tasks, and risk you must begin to plan. • Planning “the what” is vital. • Projects frequently fail because a significant part of the work is forgotten. • Once tasks have been identified, the time and resource requirements must be determined. This is called estimating.

  3. Problems with Planning • A major problem in planning is determining how long tasks will take and what it will cost. • Inaccurate estimates lead to project failures. • Cost problems lead to stress and team abandonment. • So what tool can we use to help in planning our projects…

  4. Work Breakdown Sheets • What is a WBS: Simple, you can subdivide complicated tasks into smaller tasks, until you reach a level that can not be subdivided. • Once we have been able to detail out and subdivide tasks, we can then better articulate and schedule milestones and costs. • WBS do not show the sequences in which work is performed.

  5. Guidelines for Developing a WBS • Develop a problem statement and mission statement. • Does not have to be symmetrical. • Some objectives may have more tasks than others. • Should be developed before the schedule. • Stop breaking down work when you reach a low enough level to do an estimate of the desired accuracy.

  6. Uses of WBS • Scope of work. • Help estimate time and money, resources needed for the project. • Simplifying the workload. • Good way to stay moving forward with objectives. • It is clear to individuals, both stakeholders and non stakeholders alike. • Helps when assigning responsibilities.
