  1. Abstract and Concrete Use “On Morality” as your model. Write a 750 word essay in which you work with an abstraction making your “mind veer inflexibly toward the particular.” Possible abstract terms: Justice, truth, happiness, etc. Others????

  2. How to do your prewriting… • Make a list of the following items: • Your abstract word= • Your four, (or fewer), concrete examples: • Real, not made up • Real, not hypothetical • Situations where you have seen your word in action

  3. Your Introductory Paragraph • Use your prewriting/list in the following way: • Begin your introduction with one of your 4 examples. • Explain how this situation makes you think of “love” or “honor” or whatever your abstract term is. • Make sure your abstraction/thesis shows how you feel about the “word.”

  4. Your Three Body Paragraphs • Use your prewriting/list in the following way: • Use each of the rest of your examples in a paragraph of its own. • Explain how each situation makes you think of “love” or “honor” or whatever your abstract term is. • Feel free to treat your word positively or negatively

  5. Your Concluding Remarks • This can be its own paragraph organized in any of the following ways: • Summarize your thoughts on “love” or “honor” or whatever your abstraction is. • Speculate on the implications of “love” or “honor” or whatever your abstraction is. • Actually, your conclusion can be set up any way you like.

  6. What are my requirements? • Approximately 750 words • Count one line and multiply by the number of lines written for an approximate count. • Write the word count at the top of the paper. • Write on every OTHER line and don’t use the back. • Turn in at the end of the period.

Write a 750 word essay in which you work with another instance (besides war) where only concrete detail will adequately depict the intensity needed to do what you do. Possible topics: Playing football, basketball, baseball, softball, etc. Day-to-day pressure of being… a senior, a slacker, a good student, a checker at HEB, a marching band member, a bearkadette, a cheerleader, a standleader etc. Others??? Work related, home related, etc.

(No whining) • Your (four) concrete examples/categories: • Real, not made up • Real, not hypothetical • Ample details of each to enliven your abstract statement

  9. Your Introductory Paragraph • Use your prewriting/list in the following way: • Begin your introduction with an example which typifies your situation. • Explain/elaborate with specificity. • End with an abstraction/thesis to show how you feel about the situation.

  10. Your Three Body Paragraphs • Use your prewriting/list in the following way: • Use each of the rest of your examples/categories in a paragraph of its own. • Give the details of each situation which you are using to drive home your point. • Feel free to treat your situation positively or negatively.
