POLLUTION UNIT 11: INFLUENCES ON THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCES “Pollution, which comes from a number of different sources, and stressful living conditions can influence people’s health and well-being”
AIR POLLUTION • http://video.google.co.uk/videosearch?q=noise+pollution+video&hl=en&emb=0&aq=f&start=10#q=air+pollution++video&hl=en&emb=0 • Cause of ill health and premature death • The Acheson report (1998) – particulate matter was responsibel for over 8,000 deaths and 10,000 hospital admissions • Motor vehicles – carbon monoxide (fell by 55%), nitrogen oxides (fell by 40%), volatile organic compunds and particulate matter (48%). • Its on the decrease 1991 - 2002 – see %’s above
REASONS…. Improved air quality is due to: • Improved vehicle technology • Less coal is now burned in power stations • Improved pollution control measures in power generation
WATER POLLUTION • Social trends (2005) reports that the quality of water in rivers and canals has improved over the last 15 years • Poor water quality can be caused by chemical pollution, including nitrates and lack of oxygen
TYPES OF WATER POLLUTION • Surface water pollution • Agricultural run-off • Industrial discharge • Oil
NOISE POLLUTION • May create stress and contribute to ill-health • A noisy home environment may prevent people from sleeping and may create a feeling of not being safe, secure and in control of your life • Noise pollution is a growing problem particulary in relation to noisy neighbours
