  1. What?? Description- Plans Why?? Goal Where? Location Who? Responsible and potential users When? Availability How?? Rules The Laboratory 530 R-005: RADMON and more A. Masi Contents

  2. 1 –What?? Description- Plans • The laboratory 530 R-005 is an electronic lab classified by RP/DSG as supervised area (“zone surveillee`”) where it is possible to perform soldering and de-soldering operations on activated electronic boards. The ambient dose of the area must be below 3 mSv/h

  3. 1 –What?? Description- Plans The interventions on no-radioactive materials cannot be performed in “Zone Surveille`”

  4. 1 –What?? Description- Plans “Zone Surveille`”

  5. 1 –What?? Description- Plans “Zone Surveille`”: working bench

  6. 1 –What?? Description- Plans Tools Aspirator Soldering – Desoldering station Hand lens

  7. 2–Why The goal • The laboratory is mainly dedicated to the maintenance activities of the RADMON devices installed in the LHC but exceptionally is opened to other activities of other groups at CERN. • The works authorized are: • Inspection of electronic board and their components • Soldering and de-soldering of electronic components

  8. 3 –Where?? Location

  9. 4 –Who?? Responsible • RADMON Intervention team: • Christian Pignard • Sergio Batuca • Giovanni Spiezia • Jerome Lendaro

  10. 4 –Who?? Potential users • The laboratory can be used for exceptional activities besides RADMON. The requesting group should: • Name one or more persons Responsible of intervention. He will send a request by email to the Laboratory responsible and DGS/RP via the service service-rp-site@cern.chspecifying: • Description of the material • Description and duration of the works • List of the persons that will perform the job • The intervention will be authorized by the Laboratory responsible and DGS/RP . DGS/RP will authorize the works according to the radiological risk evaluated and can formulate specific recommendations The responsible of the laboratory is not responsible of the intervention

  11. 4 –Who?? Potential users- Responsibilities • DGS/RP (Radioprotection group) • Manage the access to the classified area of material and persons • Authorize the works on radioactive parts • Perform contamination measurements of instruments, tools, wastes and persons • List of the persons that will perform the job • Laboratory Responsible • Authorize in agreement with DGS/RP the interventions • Radmon intervention team • Open and close the lab • Intervention responsible named by each group • Take charge of the intervention request providing detailed information about the job • Take care of the arrival and departure of the radioactive material • Name the persons that will perform the intervention and is responsible that the safety rules will be followed • Person that perform the intervention • Must follow the safety procedures • Take care of the cleaning of the working place • During his work prevents the access of persons not authorized

  12. 5 –When?? The Laboratory 530 R-005 is currently operational and will be accessible until the new laboratory in 867 will be made available

  13. 6 –How?? The rules to follow

  14. 6 –How?? The rules to follow • Soldering and De-soldering procedure • Contamination measurement of the working table • Switch on the aspirator • Soldering or De-soldering • Suck out the residues of the de-soldering process and throw away the radioactive components in the radioactive waste • Contamination measurement of the working table after the intervention

  15. 7– Conclusions • The 530 R-005 lab is now operational • RADMON maintenance is the main and high priority activity • The lab can host interventions from other groups at CERN. • A list of responsible persons from each group that intends to use the lab should be provided • DGS/RP is responsible to authorize the intervention together with the laboratory responsible • The laboratory supervisor is not responsible for the intervention performed by other groups (besides RADMON)
