The Sphinx of Giza A sphinx is a mythological figure, which looks like a lion with a human head. The most famous sphinx in Egypt is the Sphinx of Giza.
The Sphinx of Giza is built around 2500 BC, by the Pharaoh Khafre. People believe that the Sphinx’s face is the face of Khafre. Ancient Egyptians put it in front of the pyramids to guard the tombs. It’s 70m long and 20m tall.
If a person walks by, the Sphinx would ask them a riddle, if the person answers incorrectly, it would eat them; if they answered correctly, it would let them pass. A famous riddle is, “What has one voice, and yet goes from four legs, to two legs, to three legs?” The answer is a man.
