The NHS in Scotland spends an estimated £140 million on hospital treatment for diseases caused by smoking (Buck et al 1997)
67% of Scottish smokers want to give up (West 1995) but the success rate for 'self-quitters' is low. The 1-year continuous abstinence rate for smokers making an unaided quit attempt is less than 5% (Foulds 1996).
