Applications ofWatershed Boundary DatasetandNational Hydrography Dataset Margo Berendsen Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center
Applications • Watershed Boundary Dataset • “Computer-Aided Resource Analysis Tool” (CARAT) • APD Toolkit • Automated Geospatial Watershed Analysis (AGWA) • National Hydrography Dataset • Fish passage database
GIS-based tool for environmental assessment • Applications for building wells, roads, pipelines, etc. are entered into CARAT • CARAT runs automated GIS queries/analysis • Resource specialists evaluate CARAT’s results and add their own expert knowledge, comments and stipulations • results used in an EA document and are also stored in a spatial database for future analysis (such as for cumulative impacts, using the Watershed Boundary Dataset)
In this cumulative analysis for a pipeline, all sixth-level units in the Watershed Boundary Dataset that the pipeline passes through are highlighted and listed in the results. The results window will show the total number of wells and other activities per watershed unit, also the total length of roads per unit.
APD Toolkit Customized GIS tools to assess effects of surface disturbance and produced water discharge associated with Coalbed Natural Gas (erosion, runoff, sedimentation) track cumulative effects from small watersheds to basin level
AGWA Automated Geospatial Watershed Assessment A multi-scale hydrological modeling tool Based on changes (disturbance) to landscape due to development (well pads, roads, pipelines), AGWA can show effect on hydrological process Compare past, present and possible future scenarios Uses existing watershed boundaries (WBD) or delineate watersheds
Results for Muddy Creek watershed • Past: average surface runoff 10.33 mm • Future: average surface runoff 11.44 mm • Percent change, past to future
National Hydrography Dataset Fish Passage Database (Wyoming Game 7 Fish Dept) Using upstream and downstream tracing along the NHD, this application will be able to tell biologists all the barriers that fish encounter along a stream The application will also create maps and reports showing how many barriers occur by watershed or other unit
