Poem Style • Cavalier poem -musical, lighthearted verse -tried to imitate the grace and polish of classical Latin poetry -Carpe Diem “seize the day” • Tone- changes throughout the poem - insincere, sincere, melancholic, lusty • Themes: 1. life is short so don’t take things for granted 2. time is everything • Rhyme: uses rhyming couplets (aabbccdd….) -Example: (p.524 l. 1-8) • Rhythm: iambic tetrameter
Poem Style (other literary devices) • Hyperbole- (p. 524 l. 5) “Thou by the Indian Ganges’ side” • Expresses his emotions for his mistress but she is not truly in the Ganges • Allusion- (p. 524 l. 8-10) -refers to religious events
