The Data Melting Pot: A Look at the NAEP State Profiles Project Carl Andrews, Ida Jones and Jennifer Manise Council of Chief State School Officers
Background • To inform the National Center for Education Statistics on background information issues related to NAEP • Eight months into Year 1 • Ease data burden placed on states by using existing data sources
Attention: • Our distinguished colleagues at the National Center for Education Statistics and the Education Statistics Services Institute were not able to join us for this session. • http://nces.ed.gov/ • http://www.air.org/program_areas/fedstat/fedstat-set.htm
Project Goals • To add to the capacity of NCES to provide state-level indicator information to inform internal users of NAEP state reports • Create a “mega” database of several existing databases • CCSSO Annual Survey of State Student Assessment Programs • CCSSO State Education Indicators • Focus on Title I • Science and Math • CCSSO Key State Policies on K-12 Education • CCD Demographic Data • Potentially Others?
Annual Survey of State Student Assessment Programs • Most comprehensive survey of its kind • 50-State Participation • Presents the reader with information about the status of state assessment programs • Provides descriptions of how the programs have changed over the years.
State Education Indicators with a Focus on Title I • Provides State Profiles of Student Achievement Data • Includes Contextual Information for Every State • School and Student Demographics • Teacher Preparation • Performance on NAEP • Accountability Summaries • Title I Student Demographics
State Education Indicators on Science and Mathematics • Provides enrollment information on upper-level science and math course-taking • Student Achievement in Math and Science • Curriculum • Teacher Preparation and Supply
Key State Policies on K-12 Education • Policy-focused report • graduation • assessment • teacher licensure • time and attendance • content standards
What have we accomplished in the last eight months? • Created Three Profiles • Accommodations for LEP and Students with Disabilities • State Assessment Programs • State Education Policies • Updated State Assessment testing window from SSAP for further discussion of NAEP testing window with various audiences.
What we hope to accomplish in the next four months-- • Complete remaining profiles • Review the validity and expediency of our model • Quality control of data
Further down the road… • Explore the feasibility of housing the database on the web • Make the database available to other audiences.
Further down the road… • Are there audience suggestions on the utility of this database?
